Nonprofit Transparency

Rivendell Sanctuary values accountability and transparency as a matter of ethical and responsible practice to preserve the important trust each donor places in us. We demonstrate nonprofit transparency through clear communications, telling people how their donations are used.

The sanctuary is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization.

100% of donations received are used toward animal-related needs.

History

April 2022

  • Kelly and Paul write offer to purchase Rivendell Sanctuary.

June 2022

  • Escrow closes on Rivendell Sanctuary.

  • Rivendell Sanctuary files for incorporation with founders holding initial Board of Director roles.

  • Rivendell Sanctuary files as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization.

  • Starting to remove brush on land.

July 2022

  • Work on brush removal continues.

  • Installation of gates and horse fencing starts.

August 2022

  • Gates and horse fencing completed.

  • Consultation with permaculture specialist.

  • Permaculture gardens being developed.

  • Rivendell Sanctuary granted nonprofit 501(c)(3) status.

  • Three new trees planted.

September 2022

  • Deer spotted in The Shire.

  • Work on brush removal continues.

  • Mentorship with two California sanctuaries.

  • Fairview fire starts on September 5, 2022. More than 2,000 frontline workers respond.

October 2022

  • ERP completed.

November 2022

  • PERC completed.

  • Preparations begin for construction.

  • Kelly loses her father. Several donations in his memory are received by the sanctuary, something her father believed in very much. Designs for a gazebo in The Shire are developed. Build to take place in summer, once The Shire's soil has recovered from the heavy rains.

December 2022

  • Mountain lion tracks discovered by Bree.

  • PERC outcomes - Rivendell and Bree greenlighted.

  • Clearing of T-zone (emergency) area complete.

January 2023

  • Heavy rains and damage to dirt road.

  • Greenhouse plans complete.

February 2023

  • Heavy rains continue. One maple tree damaged.

  • Greenhouse started.

  • Bobcat spotted in The Shire.

  • Sanctuary hires accountant.

March 2023

  • Finalize new build loans and plans.

  • Heavy rains continue. One oak tree damaged and lost.

  • Greenhouse finished.

  • First snake (gopher) spotted on Rivendell proper.

April 2023

  • Neighboring orchard has new owner.

  • Paul picks up donated car and trailer from Washington.

  • Dirt road is repaired.

  • Engineers finish site plans and prepare to file permits

  • Security cameras pick-up young couple spending time in The Shire (and we don't know whether to be upset about their trespassing or happy they found it just as magical as we do).

June 2023​

  • Poetry path clearing

  • Road base put down for parking lot

  • Surplus of cucumbers become pickles

  • First Red Diamond Rattlesnake on property - rehomed

August 2023

  • Stray dog limps onto Rivendell and provided sanctuary. We named him Frodo.

  • Second Red Diamond Rattlesnake on property (ready to lay eggs) - rehomed

  • SCE on property to complete plans for electricity

  • Tropical Storm Hilary hits. Damage to road, outdoor structures, and several large tree branches downed

  • Perimeter mulching

  • Super blue moon

September 2023

  • Design of Second Chance Garden

  • Hornworms in garden and tarantulas on plateau 

  • Dad's trailer is stolen from Bree

  • Winter preparations

  • Start of the chicken coop

  • Mom moved to Rivendell

  • Continued work on the chicken coop

January 2024​

  • A white owl comes to live at the sanctuary

  • Greenhouse full of seedlings and over 10 dozen seedlings planted in the gardens

  • Meditation garden structures put in place

  • Mountain lion and deer captured in the Shire by cameras

  • Construction activities begin to prepare house pad

March 2024​

  • House delivered
