People hustling. Streets and sidewalks are busy and full. I carefully weave my way in and out, my pace is fast. The day is short.
Freeways jammed with traffic. Horns honking. Big cars. Little cars. Silent cars. Loud cars. I always take the slow lane. Seems the safest and less stressful.
I wake by 4am. I start my bedtime routine by 8pm. My mind is consistently noisy and active with thoughts. Ideas. Things that must be done. Something I did that perhaps, I think I didn't do well enough. I ruminate on that idea because I struggle with perfectionism.
At Rivendell, there are no busy streets. No traffic noise. A mind that is stilled by an exhausted body. The dichotomy between my two homes is not lost on me. It is easy to leave one behind as I drive up the now familiar dusty dirt road leading me to my new home.
On Saturday, I awoke to a slow moving misty morning, a fresh cool breeze, and Rivendell's wildlife joining me to welcoming the sunrise. Our skies are full of hawks, sparrows, and hummingbirds. I don't believe I have yet shared the dozens of hummingbirds that call Rivendell home. There are more bird species than I can identify, lots of rabbits, and coyotes always yelping in the yonder and being echoed by dogs barking warnings from neighboring hilltops. Throughout the weekend, Freya listened intently, becoming familiar with all the many sounds. True to her breed, she slept all day and stayed up all night, guarding her domain.
This weekend, we cleared more land, built a shed, and took delivery of some large items including a riding mower and fencing materials. The shed took two solid days, many curse words, and left Paul and myself with sore muscles and tanned arms. We now have many stacks of brush waiting to be hauled out. That will happen next weekend and we will both be glad to get those out of the way.
We arrived back to the city at almost 9pm last evening. Paul and I were caked in three days worth of sweat and dirt. We were surprised by how quickly your hair can dreadlock when not combed. A hot shower never felt so incredible.
I slept like a baby and dreamed of hummingbirds.
